In God We Trust
The motto of the United States of America is
"In God we trust." We even find this phrase all over our money,
even though most people trust their money more than God. It occurs to me
that it would be rather silly to trust in a being who does not exist. Just
because our government believes that God exists does not make it a
reality. Even so, we have never had an atheist President of the United
States. Could it be that the people would be unwilling to put their trust
in someone who did not feel accountable to a higher power?
Endowed by their Creator
The United States Declaration of Independence declares, "We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights" The founding fathers thought that it was self-evident (in other words, not even questionable) that humans were created by God. What is ironic is that the declaration itself was written by a non-Christian, Thomas Jefferson.
Let there be light
Being
a native Californian, I have taken classes at the University of
California, and even worked for the University of California, Los
Angeles (UCLA) for 9 years. I find it remarkable that their motto is
taken right out of the Genesis creation account of the Bible, "Let there be light."
Not only is the verse out of the Bible, but there is even an image of the Bible on their logo. One could speculate that it is just an oversized book. However, the large "A" at the beginning of the page is characteristic of Bibles and not found very often in textbooks. Could there be light to be found in the Bible? Read on...
