Should Christians Worship to Rock Music?

Introduction

There are a number of Christians who have argued that God is not honored through rock music, even if the music is written by Christians and proclaims God's glory through the lyrics. This page will examine some of the issues involved in Christian worship and what the Bible has to say about them.

What are the components of Christian worship?

There are many ways to worship God. When we hear the word "worship," we usually think about singing praises to God along with musical accompaniment. However, everything that we do with our bodies should be done as an act of worship:

Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship. (Romans 12:1)

God sings to us!

However, since this page is looking at the role of music in Christian worship, we will examine this issue specifically. In doing this study, I was surprised to find that God Himself sings to us!

The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing." (Zephaniah 3:17)

Music/singing in Jewish/early Christian worship

The Old Testament records that singing was an integral part of Jewish worship. This worship consisted of singing1 (with and without accompaniment). It is clear from the Bible that the early Christian church worshipped Christ through singing, and we are encouraged to do so.2 In addition, even secular accounts (e.g., Pliny the Younger, governor of Pontus/Bithynia from 111-113 AD) recorded the early Christian church's singing to Christ:

"They asserted, however, that the sum and substance of their fault or error had been that they were accustomed to meet on a fixed day before dawn and sing responsively a hymn to Christ as to a god.3

Use of instruments

The use of instruments in worship is also recorded in the scriptures. Among the instruments mentioned are lyres, harps, tambourines, castanets, flutes, trumpets, timbrels, and cymbals.4 In fact, virtually all of the Psalms were performed to musical accompaniment. Many Psalms even mention the tune to which they are to be sung.

Too loud?

Many people object to the level of music, especially when it comes to rock music. However, when you are really worshipping God, the joy (and sound level) cannot be contained. Scripture records many instances where the singing and playing to the Lord was very loud.5 The descriptions include such phrases as "the earth shook," "with all their might," "loud," "was heard from afar," "shout," and "resounding." In many instances we are encouraged by the scriptures to "shout" our joy to the Lord while singing. Shouting cannot be done quietly or in any kind of reserved way.

Too weird?

Bruchko, by Bruce OlsenSome people think that rock music is too weird to give honor to the Lord. However, there is a good story in one of my favorite books, Bruchko by Bruce Olson, that relates to this question. Bruce Olson spent many years in South America attempting to witness to the Motilone people. He became friends with a boy, Bobby (real name was Bobarishora), who became a young man through the years that Bruce stayed with the people. Bruce eventually learned the language and led Bobby to faith in Jesus Christ (a fascinating story on its own). Bobby was so excited about his faith that he spent an entire night (14 hours) witnessing to his lodge in a way that was uniquely Motilone. Here is Bruce's account of the singing and his reaction to it:

Bobby's song was about the way the Motilones had been deceived and had lost God's trail. He told how they had once known God but had been greedy and had followed a false prophet. Then he began to sing about Jesus. As he did so, the other men who were singing stopped. Everyone became quiet in order to listen.
"Jesus Christ was incarnated into man," Bobby sang. "He has walked our trails. He is God, yet we can know Him."
The home was deathly still except for Bobby's wailing song and Abjibacayra's repetition. People were straining their ears to hear. Inside me, however, a spiritual battle was raging. I found myself hating the song. It seemed so heathen. The music, chanted in a strange minor key, sounded like witch music. It seemed to degrade the gospel. Yet when I looked at the people around me and up at the chief swinging in his hammock, I could see that they were listening as though their lives depended upon it. It was Bobby giving them spiritual truth through the song...
"But, Lord," I replied, "why am I so repulsed by it?"
Then I saw that it was because I was sinful. I could love the Motilone way of life, but when it came to spiritual matters I thought I had the only way. But my way wasn't necessarily God's way. God was saying, "I, too, love the Motilone way of life. I made it. And I'm going to tell them about My Son in My way."

Even though Bruce was unaccustomed to the harsh tones of Motilone singing, he realized that the music was honoring to God. The music that was initially repulsive to Bruce led to the salvation of the entire home that Bobby lived in, and eventually to the salvation of virtually the entire village and other Motilone villages.

Even if we personally don't appreciate Christian rock music, but it honors God, we should not judge others for the way in which they worship. We are encouraged to do all things to the glory of God,6 and if we do so with a clear conscience, we should not be judged by other Christians.7

All music good?

Music can be used for both good and evil purposes, and is seldom spiritually neutral. Examples exist within the Bible of music being used for evil purposes. For example, king Nebuchadnezzar made a large golden idol, and called people to worship it through the sound of musical instruments.8 Much of the modern secular music encourages its listeners to engage in immoral activities and bow down to the idols of materialism. Such music is inappropriate for Christians, even if it "has a good beat" or is in some other way appealing to listen to.

Music in your future?

Singing is not an optional component of worship for Christians. The scriptures make it clear that we are to sing to the Lord,2 and such a desire should flow naturally from a grateful heart that has received the free gift of God's salvation through Jesus Christ. Yes, there will be singing in heaven.9 I can't say that the music will be rock and roll, but I wouldn't be surprised if it were loud and energetic.

    Now David was clothed with a robe of fine linen with all the Levites who were carrying the ark, and the singers and Chenaniah the leader of the singing with the singers. David also wore an ephod of linen. (1 Chronicles 15:27)
    Sing to Him, sing praises to Him; Speak of all His wonders. (1 Chronicles 16:9)
    Sing to the LORD, all the earth; Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day. (1 Chronicles 16:23)
    All these were under the direction of their father to sing in the house of the LORD, with cymbals, harps and lyres, for the service of the house of God. Asaph, Jeduthun and Heman were under the direction of the king. (1 Chronicles 25:6)
    And their number who were trained in singing to the LORD, with their relatives, all who were skillful, was 288. (1 Chronicles 25:7)
    in unison when the trumpeters and the singers were to make themselves heard with one voice to praise and to glorify the LORD, and when they lifted up their voice accompanied by trumpets and cymbals and instruments of music, and when they praised the LORD saying, "He indeed is good for His lovingkindness is everlasting," then the house, the house of the LORD, was filled with a cloud, (2 Chronicles 5:13)

    Moreover, Jehoiada placed the offices of the house of the LORD under the authority of the Levitical priests, whom David had assigned over the house of the LORD, to offer the burnt offerings of the LORD, as it is written in the law of Moses-- with rejoicing and singing according to the order of David.     Then Hezekiah gave the order to offer the burnt offering on the altar. When the burnt offering began, the song to the LORD also began with the trumpets, accompanied by the instruments of David, king of Israel. (2 Chronicles 29:27)
    While the whole assembly worshiped, the singers also sang and the trumpets sounded; all this continued until the burnt offering was finished. (2 Chronicles 29:28)
    Now at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought out the Levites from all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem so that they might celebrate the dedication with gladness, with hymns of thanksgiving and with songs to the accompaniment of cymbals, harps, and lyres. (Nehemiah 12:27)
