Sometimes, this is difficult to see, especially if we are not indwelt by the Holy Spirit (i.e., accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior). Before I became a Christian, I thought I was doing quite well morally. I compared myself to others (some even Christian) and saw that I probably exceeded their righteousness. However, breaking even one of the ten commandments (which includes coveting and lying - something everyone has done) makes us worthy of death in the eyes of God. Now that the Holy Spirit lives in me, I realize that I failed (and continue to fail) to live up to the standards of God. As Romans 3:23 states, I continually fall short of the glory of God. I am guilty and have fallen under God's sentence of death. |
